If your AC seems like it’s always running, then not only your unit is in need of maintenance, but (worse) you’re wasting money on energy bills! Let’s look at how to troubleshoot the problem if your AC is constantly cycling.

Common Reasons an AC Runs Continuously

  • Clogged AC filters
  • Low Thermostats
  • Faulty Unit Components
  • Undersized for the Space
  • Leaky Ductwork
  • Poor Insulation

One common reason an AC runs continuously is due to a dirty or clogged air filter. When the air filter is obstructed, it restricts airflow, causing the system to work harder to maintain the desired temperature. This can lead to the AC running longer than necessary to compensate for the reduced efficiency. The fix here: change your filters consistently. You may have to exchange them more often if you have pets or allergies.

Another reason could be that the thermostat is set too low. If the thermostat is set to a temperature that is significantly lower than the outside temperature, the AC will have to work continuously to try to reach and maintain that setting, especially during extremely hot weather. Here’s more about smart thermostats so you can see why they are totally trending in homes across Tampa Bay!

Faulty components within the AC unit, such as a malfunctioning blower motor or a failing compressor, can also cause the system to run continuously. These issues can prevent the AC from cooling effectively, leading to longer run times as the system attempts to compensate. For faulty components, the best fix is to give us a call. We’ll find & fix whatever it is affordably.

Another reason could be poor system setup. If your AC is constantly cycling, it could be an undersized AC unit or even the ductwork. If the air conditioning system is not appropriately sized for the space it is intended to cool, it will struggle to reach the set temperature, resulting in prolonged operation times (and wear and tear). Plus, if there are leaks in the ductwork, cool air can escape before it reaches the intended rooms. This loss of cooled air forces the AC to run longer to achieve the desired temperature inside the house.

Poor insulation in the home can lead to an AC running non-stop. If the home is not well-insulated, cool air can escape and warm air can enter, making it difficult for the AC to maintain a consistent temperature. This inefficiency forces the system to run more frequently.

Low refrigerant levels can be another reason for an AC running constantly. If there is a refrigerant leak or the system is undercharged, the AC will struggle to cool the air efficiently, causing it to run longer to achieve the desired temperature. Refrigerant is not something we suggest you DIY. Again, the best solution is to call in the experts.
