FIXED: Heat Pump not Heating

We’ve all been there – it’s the middle of winter brrr it’s freezing out and you suddenly realize that your heat pump isn’t doing its job. It’s blowing out air, but it’s not nearly as warm as it should be.

You’ve tried adjusting the thermostat settings, but nothing seems to work. Don’t worry, our pros at ACHV Services are here to help you out!

Understanding Your Heat Pump

Unlike conventional heaters that generate heat, heat pumps transfer heat from one place to another. In other words, it’s pulling heat from outside and bringing it into your home

The heat pump’s job is to extract available heat and transport it into your living space. If it’s not doing that, then something is certainly off track.

Potential Causes of Heat Pump Not Heating

There could be various reasons why your heat pump is not heating. Some might need a professional fix, while others you might be able to handle on your own.

Here are some common causes:

  • Incorrect thermostat settings
  • Low refrigerant level
  • Power supply issues

Steps to Fix a Non-Heating Heat Pump

First, we always recommend ensuring your thermostat is set to “heat” and that the temperature setting is higher than your room’s current temperature.

Sounds simple, but it’s easy to overlook.

If that doesn’t work, try these troubleshooting tips:

  • Reset the Circuit Breaker: Go to the electrical panel and identify the breaker that controls your heat pump. If it’s in the “off” position or stuck in the middle—known as tripping—reset it to the “on” position.

  • Check and Change the Air Filters: Dirty or clogged air filters can significantly impact the performance of your heat pump.

  • Examine Outdoor Unit: Regularly clear any blockages to ensure your heat pump can operate unhindered.

  • Check Refrigerant Levels: A heat pump not heating can often be due to low refrigerant levels.

If none of these steps prove successful, it’s time to call in for professional help.
