What to Do If Your AC Is Running but Not Cooling

Is your home starting to feel more like a sauna and less like the relaxing sanctuary in which it normally does? Your AC seems to be running but you’re hotter than you would be if you were going for a run in the direct sun?

You have come to the right place to try and pinpoint the problem, Tampa Bay. Our team at ACHV is here to help! We know the Florida heat is nothing to mess with, especially in the hot summer months so let’s tackle this problem together.

Let’s get down to the possible root causes for your AC not cooling:

  • Your thermostat may need to be checked up, down and sideways!
  • Your air filter may need a little TLC
  • Your AC unit may even be FROZEN!

There are many reasons why your AC may be running but not cooling,
run through all these steps to find the root cause.

Let’s run through the checks and if you get stuck just call or text us (727) 453-2432 or (813) 917-2982 for fast and affordable HVAC service.

Check Your Thermostat

You will want to first check your thermostat to rule out that being the potential issue. Are the settings correctly set? Are the batteries running on “E”? Is your thermostat clean? If any of these are the culprit behind your now scorching hot house, it more than likely should be an easy fix.

If any of these fix your problem, you should be cooling off in no time and probably don’t need a professional to assess the situation, unless it persists.

Check Your Air Filter

If you have furry little friends in your house or you are constantly running your AC, your filter may be (very) dirty.

Although we love our animals, they can cause dirt to accumulate more rapidly within our filters. When your AC filter is dirty, air may not be getting to the evaporator coil which can cause it to freeze. Make sure you are keeping up with your air filter to prevent any issues from arising in the future.

Why worry about potential grimy air filters? We recommend always having a backup filter for the times that you may forget to change it…But set a reminder in your calendar and while in there set an alert for annual maintenance too ?. Trust us, you can save on a big repair bill and avoid issues from appearing out of ‘nowhere’ with routine check-ups.

Frozen Air Conditioner

This is a nuisance that a lot of Floridians deal with and it’s even worse when it happens in the hottest part of the year!

There are some quick fixes to help the problem at hand such as turning your unit off and only letting the fan be on; however, these are more of a band aid for the issue rather than a viable solution. To avoid anything more serious from arising, it is imperative that you contact a professional to help address the situation fully.

HVAC issues like blocked AC vents, clogged air filters, low levels of refrigerant, dirty coils and leaking refrigerant may cause your AC lines to freeze.

If a frozen air conditioner is the problem, don’t wait to call a professional.
This is not an issue you want to put on the back burner for “another day”.

Our experts at ACHV Services can help address your issues and get your home temperature back down. The last thing you want is to deal with the bombshell that leaving this issue untreated can unleash on you, especially in the Tampa Bay heat.
