In Tampa Bay, we all know how VITAL our ACs are! The last thing anyone wants during our endless summer is to have their AC stop working.

Our team here at ACHV Services put together this helpful guide on what to do if your AC unexpectedly stops working, so you can know if it’s an easy fix or if you need professional help.

If you’re left out in the heat with no air conditioning, keep your cool. Here are a few things you should try to fix that AC that’s on the fritz:

  • Check the thermostat’s batteries (Yes, it could be that simple.)
  • Check the unit air filters and make sure they’re clean
  • Check the power supply to make sure it’s turned on at the breaker
  • Call a professional to help fix your AC system

Common Signs of AC Issues

Typically, an AC won’t suddenly go out without any warning, therefore it’s important to know what to look out for so it can be repaired before the whole unit goes out. Although getting routine maintenance can catch these issues before they begin, here are a few signs your AC needs attention:

  • Little to no air coming out from the vents
  • Odd smells and/or sounds coming from the unit
  • Unusually high electric bills
  • Your AC is running constantly without cooling the temperature
  • Water is leaking from the unit

If you’re experiencing any of these problems, it’s important to call a licensed professional immediately and schedule an appointment for HVAC maintenance. This will help ensure that your AC is running correctly and efficiently while preventing any more serious problems from arising.

My AC Stopped Working: Now What?

If your AC does stop working or starts having any of the above issues- don’t panic! Remember: you can call our local pros anytime and we’ll be right there to lend a hand. Until then, we break down the next steps you should take to narrow down the causes:

Check Your AC Thermostat

Believe it or not, we’ve solved a few calls by simply replacing batteries. Just like any other device, if the thermostat’s batteries run out, it won’t be able to turn on. Sometimes, the thermostat can be what is causing you a headache without there being anything wrong with your AC system itself.

Clean or Replace Your Home Air Filters

Over time, your air filters become clogged with dust and dirt, preventing the unit from cooling properly.

If you haven’t changed them in a while, it’s important to replace them as soon as possible, as dirty filters require your AC to work harder- leading to overheating and failure.

The general rule of thumb is to change your air filters every 3 months –
but it’s best to check the specific instructions for your AC unit.

Check Your HVAC Circuit Breaker

HVAC systems have their own circuit breakers that protect the AC from an electrical overload. If your unit is not receiving any power, you may need to have your circuit breaker reset. For safety reasons, we suggest you always call a professional to inspect your AC system and then reset the breaker if necessary.

Check If You Blew a Fuse

If your AC suddenly stopped working and you can’t find any other issues, it is possible a fuse might have blown. This is especially true if the unit was running for a long time before going out, as this could indicate an electrical surge or overload.

Again, if it’s not batteries and air filters, you should always call a professional that has experience with the electrical components that need to be inspected or repaired.

Can it be fixed?

You’d be amazed at many of the issues we can repair with your home’s AC system, but to be honest, there are times when the unit has come too far.

Most AC systems last between 10-15 years, depending on the brand and model. If your system is older than this, it’s probably time to start considering a replacement. The most reliable way to check is to have an inspection done by a professional and discuss any options you may have.
