Why Is My AC Not Cooling My Home?

There’s nothing more frustrating than having your air conditioner running all day, only to realize that it’s not cooling your home. If your AC is blowing warm air or simply not keeping things comfortable, it could be a sign of several common issues.

Let’s look at why your AC might be running but not cooling and how you can address the problem. If you’re unsure, call/text us anytime; we’re happy to help you.

Dirty or Clogged Air Filters

One of the most common reasons for an AC that’s running but not cooling is a dirty or clogged air filter. When the filter becomes blocked, it restricts airflow, causing the system to work harder than it should. This reduces the AC’s cooling efficiency and can eventually lead to other issues like frozen coils. To prevent this, make sure to replace your air filters regularly.

Refrigerant Leaks

If your AC is low on refrigerant, it won’t be able to cool your home effectively. A refrigerant leak not only impacts cooling but also forces your system to overwork itself, leading to higher energy bills and potential long-term damage. Signs of a refrigerant leak include warm air blowing from the vents, hissing sounds, or ice forming on the refrigerant line.

Thermostat Issues

Sometimes the issue is as simple as a thermostat that’s not set correctly. Make sure the thermostat is set to “cool” and is at the right temperature setting. If the thermostat is malfunctioning or out of calibration, it might not signal the AC to cool properly. Try replacing the batteries or calling a technician if the problem persists.

Blocked or Dirty Condenser Coils

Your outdoor unit (the condenser) needs to stay free of debris for optimal performance. Over time, dirt, leaves, and other debris can accumulate around the condenser coils, blocking heat transfer and causing the AC to struggle to cool. Clear away any debris around the unit and consider having it professionally cleaned if necessary.

Frozen Evaporator Coils

Frozen evaporator coils are another common culprit when the AC is running but not cooling. This issue usually happens when there’s insufficient airflow due to the other reasons we’ve discussed, such as dirty filters, blocked vents, or low refrigerant.

If you suspect frozen coils, turn off the AC and allow them to thaw before running the system again. If the issue persists, you’ll want to call a professional for help.

What to Do Next

If you’ve checked these common issues and your AC is still not cooling properly, it’s best to call a licensed HVAC technician for a more in-depth inspection.
